Bang Bao began life as a scenic little fishing village located entirely on a long pier that runs out into a horseshoe-shaped bay close to the end of the road in the far southwest of Koh Chang. In the beginning the main reasons to visit here were the overall beauty of the place and the fantastic fresh seafood served in a couple of restaurants on the pier.
But as time has passed, the pier has developed and these days it has quite a few places to stay over the water as well as lots of shops and businesses that offer all kinds of goods and services to the visitor. There are also some really good accommodation options on the shoreline around the bay, and there is a really nice little beach at Khong Koi just a kilometre away. These days more and more people are using Bang Bao as a different kind of holiday base that offers a novel way to experience Koh Chang.
In terms of activities, Bang Bao is a great place to be since the pier is the starting point for all kinds of boat adventures. If you’d like to go diving or snorkelling there just visit one of the dive shops on the pier and they will be happy to help. Day trips to several of the other islands in the archipelago either by wooden boat or speedboat can be arranged with Bang Bao Boat who has an office at the bottom of the pier. If you are thinking of doing a bit of island hopping then you will be interested to know that they also provide a daily ferry and speedboat service to the islands of Koh Wai, Koh Mak and Koh Kood.
Eating and Drinking in Bang Bao
In terms of eating and drinking in Bang Bao it is hard to look further than the five or six seafood restaurants that are located on the pier itself. They offer super-fresh and delicious seafood, most of which you can observe swimming around in keep tanks.
A sunset meal in one of these will be one of the highlights of your visit to Koh Chang. The best restaurants are the first and the last; Ruen Thai and Buddha View.
Ruen Thai does Thai seafood only, but what they do they do very well indeed, whilst Buddha View also offers a large selection of international menu items and is a cut above the other places in terms of décor and ambience.
